👐How should you grip a steering when in heavy wind?
When driving in heavy wind, it's crucial to prioritize maintaining control of your vehicle. Here's how to grip the steering wheel effectively:
• Both hands firmly on the wheel: Avoid driving with one hand, as sudden gusts can easily disrupt your control.
• Recommended Hand Positions: The 9 and 3 o'clock position (left hand at 9, right hand at 3) is widely recommended for modern vehicles due to safety considerations related to airbag deployment. The traditional 10 and 2 o'clock position can be dangerous in case of airbag activation, as it places your arms directly in the deployment path.
• Firm, but relaxed grip: Avoid gripping the wheel too tightly, as this can make it harder to react smoothly to sudden gusts or changes in direction. A firm but relaxed grip will enable you to make small, controlled steering corrections as needed.
• Be prepared for gusts: Anticipate areas where strong winds are likely, such as exposed stretches of road, bridges, or when passing large vehicles like lorries. National Highways advises you to be extra cautious when encountering these situations.
• Avoid sudden movements: When steering, make smooth and controlled adjustments, especially at higher speeds, to prevent overcorrecting and losing control of your vehicle.
